Body Image: A Corrupt Generation

Was this really just, what, 60 years ago?!

Since I'm a teenager, I find that nowadays, a teenager's self-confidence is pretty fragile, and something that has to do with that is their body, and how they feel about it.  It's always "I have to be skinny," "I'm not skinny enough," "I'm too fat."

And honestly, I can't blame them for feeling that way.  Yes, it's a wrong and twisted way of thinking, especially when some girls aren't drinking water because they thing it's giving them calories, but looking around, they don't really have anyone else to look up to, at least not enough.  Most of the people on billboards, in magazines, on TV, in movies... the vast majority of them are stick-thin.  That's - quite unfortunately - our generation's definition of beauty.  Beauty is being 5'7 and up.  Beauty is weighing 120 pounds.  Beauty fits in size 00 jeans.  And that's just a few of the requirements.

There aren't enough Jennifer Lawrence's, or Adele's to make up for the damage that has been done to this generation of girls' confidence.

This is one of the many reasons why I respect Jennifer and Adele so much.  They aren't going let anyone out there tell me that they're fat and have to lose weight in order to make it big in the entertainment industry (they each won an Oscar without listening to those who told them to lose weight, so ha!).  Look at Jennifer, she's beautiful, yet in Hollywood, she's pretty much "obese".  Seriously, it's ridiculous.

And Adele, when she was told to lose weight, she told them, "I don't make music for eyes.  I make music for ears."  It's so, so true what she said. Without the select few who are willing to go against the common formula to making it big in this industry - that you have to be skinny, have a smitch of talent, some more than others, have a pretty face and sweet talk for the cameras - young girls only have stick-thin models to look up to

Society has really changed what we thought was beautiful.  The vast majority of us think that a girl is only beautiful if she's thin, tall, and many other traits that make her "perfect."  But can we really define "beautiful" or "perfect"?  And no, that wasn't an open invitation for you to go look through the Oxford Dictionary.

Now, it seems like there are a lot more people going against this "trend" of bring ridiculously skinny and I'm really happy to see this change.  It's really refreshing, to be honest.

Please leave me a comment telling me what your definition of beauty is (if you'd like - I'd love it if you did).  Thanks for reading!

  1. In my opinion, beauty is only skin deep. Beauty is loving yourself for who you are, your body, your personality. Whatever body size you are or whether you are weird, random, hilarious, you are still beautiful all the same! There is really no reason for anyone to have such a strong desire to be stick skinny. We are who we are! God created us the way that we are, so we should appreciate it and compliment our appearances. It is just not worth going on unhealthy diets to follow a trend that leads to gaining insecurities, putting yourself down, and obtaining serious medical issues (ex. anorexia). Beauty, it's more than just being stick skinny or weighted. Love yourself, that's the real definition of Beauty! <3
